Little White Lies' Greetings from Cannes Film Festival

Little White Lies are at the 2017 Cannes Film Festival, discovering the cream of world cinema and building up ideas for editorial coverage over the coming year. It’s a fun but stressful time on the Riviera, and you have to be ready to combine meetings and writing with up to five film screenings a day (drink lots of water is the first rule of Cannes Club). But it’s also a massive rush, rubbing shoulders with the world’s film press, seeing stars walking the red carpet and being first to see the works that will eventually trickle down to your cinema screens.

This year’s festival has launched its fair share of treats, most notably the new film from US director Sofia Coppola – The Beguiled. It played in the festival’s main competition and is vying for the top prize: the Palme d’Or. For us, it’s one of the best films of 2017 so far, a steamy southern gothic barn-burner set during the US civil war in which a wounded Yankee soldier (Colin Farrell) finds refuge in school for women run by Nicole Kidman.

Also great was Sean Baker’s The Florida Project, a realist fairytale set among a strip of cheapjack motels on the road to Disneyland. With its infectious energy and deep love of its working class characters (including a film-stealing naughty toddler played by Brooklynn Prince), this one is going to be a lot of people’s favourite new movie once it makes its way to the big screen.
