Huck launches Skill-Up video series
A new video format that sees artists and photographers hosting tutorial videos with a twist.
The series, broadcast on YouTube and IGTV, will see well-known faces jump on camera to share their unique creative expertise and walk viewers through a whole range of new skills: from DIY photo development to zine-making on a budget.
“At Huck, we’ve amassed an amazing network of contributors, all of whom we consider friends,” said Huck Editor Niall Flynn. “We see what they’re capable of every single day, and learn a hell of a lot from them as a result. Skill-Up is about giving our readers that opportunity, too.”
The first episode will see award-winning documentary photographer Cengiz Yar briefing viewers on how to photograph a protest. In the wake of the global Black Lives Matter movement, a new generation is taking to the streets to document transformative direct action in real-time. With that in mind, it’s more important than ever to ensure people know how to do that safely and successfully.
Yar has worked in Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan as part of a “long-term commitment to documenting civilian casualties as a result of conflict”. In 2015, he was the inaugural recipient of the James Foley Award for Conflict Reporting. A year later, he was part of the Associated Press team listed as finalists for the Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the battle for Mosul.
Over the course of the series, Skill-Up will tackle every corner of creativity, aiming to demystify some of the processes that the best artists and photographers use every single day. The videos will show that, with the right guidance, you can try your hand to anything – and do it well.
