Out Now: Sandwich Magazine Issue 2 'Banh Mi'
Sandwich is written as a celebration of the often overlooked, but universally beloved culinary creation, the sandwich. Each issue features a specific sandwich along with cultural reporting, photo essays, and interviews on the most surprising and creative corners of the food world at large.
“Bánh mì is home in a different way. Bánh mì is my home outside of home. It is the comforting crinkle of wrapping paper. The bitter-turned-sweet taste of cà phê sữa đá.”
Our second issue pays homage to one of our favorites, the Banh Mi. This issue explores the complicated history of the sandwich, dives into the political iconography of Spam, and the search for Maggi sauce in Saigon. This magazine is our gift to sandwich lovers everywhere.
Sandwich is a collection of stories celebrating the ingredients and people behind our favorite culinary creation.
It’s the perfect read for any sandwich-lover looking to escape the current climate and take off on an adventure across the globe. To give you a taste of what’s inside, below is an excerpt from the cover story, Everything you always wanted to know about the Banh Mi and were too afraid to ask written by Madeline Nguyen.
My childhood was marked by many constants and consistencies. The cigarette smoke that clung to the leather interior of my dad’s 2003 Lexus GS. My mom’s Wednesday night karaoke and poker parties. Arguments with my older sister over who was the rightful owner of New Year’s Eve Barbie (and the accompanying scrunchie that matched the doll’s magenta jacquard ballgown). After-school bánh mì on Fridays.
